Officers were called to the intersection of Harrison Avenue and Chestnut Street around 9:15 a.m. That's where they found the two men sound asleep. The car was still in drive as it idled there, Springfield police said.

Officials said officers spotted the assault-style rifle with an extended magazine sitting in the passenger's lap when they approached the vehicle. Police grabbed the gun immediately.

Shanard Holmes, 28, of Springfield, the passenger, was arrested. Police charged him with:

  • Carrying a firearm without a license
  • Carrying a loaded large-capacity firearm on a public way
  • Possession of ammunition without a FID card

The driver was given a ticket and released.
